Koh Man Wichai

Dive MapDive One and Two of Thailand, was with Mermaids Dive Center, which is rated as a 5 Star PADI resort but sadly I would have to rate as a One Star for the customer.  I will explain this more later.Blue Spotted Ray

So the first dive was at the Five fingers area of this island.  So the water temperature is 86 degrees and the visibililty is close to maybe 20 feet if you are lucky.  The first was lead by one of the instructors from Mermaids “Sue” and she was very professional and soft spoken and she did a marvilous job leading the dive, and ensuring the safety of the divers with her.  We toured for approximatley 40 so odd minutes, and during this dive we same many different types of tropical marine life, with things such as Barrel Sponges, and various types of tropical fish.  I would rate the dive as a 6 star dive…nothing Sea Turtleoverally special, but at least I was back in the water.

Dive Two was a dift dive to the West of the island and we remained in the same anchorage position for our entry.  Mike, lead the dive and newly certified instructor, and though I had only a few minutes to visit with him he was very professional as well, and a very good diver.  We headed out West and then drifted to the North of the island.  During this dive we were treated with sighting  a sea turtle who on Batfishthe first past seemed little interested with us as he headed off to the surface, but returned some 10 minutes later to swim with us for a few minutes until going on his merry little way.  We also had a Batfish join us during our dive and he stayed with us for a good twenty minutes as he Barrel Spongefollowed us along.  There was also a great treat of seeing two separate Blue Spoted Rays, which were my favourites with the exception of the turtle sighting.

Overall a good day spent on the boat.  On that note, the lunch provided to us on the boat was extremely tasty!!

Dive Gear Insurance Made Easy!

Ok, so you don’t have a house….nor an apartment, and you want  insurance for your dive gear…well in Canada without Tenant or house insurance the most you can get is 1500 – 2000 dollars of travel insurance, and that is to cover your trip.  Now, the trip must have a start date and a stop date, and needs to be shorter then a few months.  Well first, thanks but 2 grand does not even come close to covering my dive gear!  But thans for taking my money for really nothing.  Also  the longer the trip the more the insurance premiums are…..so I decided to go to the DAN DIVERS NETWORK DOT ORG site, and sure enough there is an insurance for dive gear, and it covers you for 1 year….now there is only one catch…..if your Canadian to bad you are not covered.

So, in the end after days of searching I found a place called DEPP (Dive Equipment Protection Program) and they will cover your dive gear for replacement for one year’s worth of premiums.  Not overally expensive either…for $5,000 dollars worth of gear its a $96.44 USD fee.  It takes 24 hours to process, and bang you are done!  So need gear insurance, call Sandy at DEPP here contact information is 1-888-678-4096 or their website is http://www.awryinc.com/index.html
