9 Mile Fun Dive

Jelly Fish Today was spent out on the charter with Steve.  With just the two of us on the boat it was a dream.  Suiting up was so simple, not need to rush, or lift 5 – 6 tanks, I simply got ready at the same time he did.  We were at 9 mile point, and I was in search of the illusive Northern Spearnose Poacher which I happened across the last time I was at 9 mile, but of course I did not have my camera with me.

Today however, I did not have any luck in finding this guy…though I did run into another Giant Pacific Giant Pacific Octopus Octopus, which was two for me.  Though Jeremy and Andrew still hold the record of three octopus on one dive. I was also able to capture some pictures of a Tube dwelling anemone, and many decorator crabs.

Dive two had us down to Tuwanek Point, on the sail boat dive, where we lucked out and ran into a huge Lions Mane jelly fish, though I think it had seen better days, it was very impressive never the less.

Conditions today were a little overcast and light rain, the water temp has cooled off on the surface where it is down to 60 degrees, and the water temp at depth is in the 54 – 55 range.  The visibility was any where from 5 ft – to 60 ft depending what depth you are at.

Wreck Trianing

HMCS Chaudiere Another outstanding weekend full of diver training!  I would like to congratulate Nancy on completing the PADI Wreck Divers course.  She was able to meet and surpass all challenges that were presented her on this course.

The course started off on Sunday the 24th of Aug, with the normal paper work and video’s that need to be completed.  Afterwords it was analyzing all the NITROX tanks we were going to use and then it was off to the water.  After the 25 minute trip up the inlet on the Suncoast Diving Zodiac, we briefed, dressed and rolled into the water.  Visibility was certainly murky to say the least after the day or so of rain, and temperature changes.

After dive one, it was off to the beach to enjoy some down time while we prepared for dive two.  Once we finished the brief it was back on the wreck for dive two.  Points of entry were explored, and planes were being prepared for the next day. DIGITAL IMAGE
Day Two, had us back up on the Chaudiere, just in time for Nancy to do the reel work on the outside of the wreck, and as everyone knows who have tried to use a reel, it is no easy task!  Nancy, had little problems and was able to make short work of this skill, so it was off to investigating more penetration points!

Dive 4, was spent with Nancy doing a nice swim through, and then exploring the wreck some more.  Once again congratulations Nancy…well done!!

Interested in taking a wreck course….stop by Suncoast Divings web site and see what’s happening in the trianing schedule!!

Tuwanek Beach or Octopus Point

Giant Pacific Octopus After 2 days off, and another day as charter operator, I just had to get into the water. Sure enough, the shop had not even been closed for 20 minutes, and I was already in the water enjoying a fun dive down in Tuwanek.

I quickly descended down to 60 – 70 feet, following the wall on the left island around until I spotted the descent line on the mooring buoy. Right in that general area, there is a large slab of rock and there he was, a Giant Pacific Octopus.

Great dive…even if it was a quicky!! :)

Wreck Course Complete

chaudiere10.jpg There is a big congratulations to passed along to Peter and Jeremy as they sucessfully completed the PADI Wreck course that was held on the weekend, thanks to Suncoast Diving.

Friday was the first day of the Wreck course. The two students conducted a complete survey and image re creation of the sail boat which is resting in 30 feet of water at Tuwanek Point. Everything went well, both students demonstrated excellent buoyancy and diving skills.

On with Day Two, the HMCS CHAUDIERE, where the first dive on Saturday had us navigating and mapping the wreck in order to find a good penetration point for the last dive of the specialty. Both students were up for a chaudiere_jdr.jpg couple easy swim throughs on the wreck. The next dive had both students working on running the penetrations reels on the out side of the wreck which can be tricky…though both students did an excellent job!

Sunday was the big day for the penetration, Jeremy and Peter decided to penetrate on the forward gun bay door, through the bride, and down the Ops Room ladder, and through the Operations Room and exiting through the cut out on the Starboard side. Both did an excellent job!

Well done to all!!

Busy Week Training

imgp1678_sm.jpg Another busy week has passed with many different course going on. Jeremy and Bruno were completing Dive 3 + 4 of the Advanced Nitrox and Decompression Procedures course. Congratulations to Jeremy for completing his Advanced Nitrox!!! The training dives were conducted out at Tuwanek Point and then Tuwanek Island Left.

The first dive was all skills, though challenging both students did a fantastic job. The skills completed were V drills, S Drills (No mask), Donning and Doffing of cylinders with and without mask. Lift bag deployment, and then actual decompression stops…and NOTOX switches. imgp1647_sm.jpg

The next training dive was more of an exploration, with another S drill and full v drills. Knowing how dry skills can be…it is so important to ensure that the drills become second nature in the event there is an equipment failure.

Jeremy’s next dive is going to be a decompression dive on the HMCS CHAUDIERE. I am so looking forward to the one.

imgp1671_sm.jpg Interested in doing some training….there is a Wreck Course starting on Friday, the 8th of Aug…with one more seat available…or you interested in doing some Technical Dive Training….be sure to visit Suncoast Diving for more information.
