He’s Back….. again!!

Giant Pacific Octopus Yesterday had UWE out in Tuwanek working on Bruno’s Rescue course.  Things went extremely well, Bruno had no troubles at all completing the skills that were needed for this dive.  On completion, we figured we would go on a little fun dive, and I have been wanting to get down to check out the one octopus den we had so much luck with last year….and sure enough!  He’s Back and bigger then ever!

While returning to the excite point sure enough we ran into a beautiful little pipe fish!  This little guy was sitting in about 25 ft Bay PipeFish of water, out on the sand just checking things out.  You can tell that spring is in full swing, the shallows were teeming with life!  We are headed back there tomorrow, to do a refresher in the doubles, so we can finish off Bruno’s Decompression’s course….more video you say??  Definitely!!!

Tuwanek Wolf Eel Dive

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA A big thank you goes out to Andrew and Vince for coming over to the coast, so they could make sure we were able to get on the Wolf Eels on the right island.  The short surface swim seems to pass rather quickly with the excitement of finally getting the footage we want of the wolf eels.  As we arrived at the point of the island it was time to descend and get on our way.  The first thing I realize on the descent, is that I really do not dive this side enough.  Things that I remember are nothing like what I see, though I am more then happy to follow on this dive.

As we proceeded past the area where the row boat, we are greeted with 80 foot visibility, and a slight increase in water temperature, which is very welcomed after a long cold winter of diving.  We continued our swim for about 18 minutes, and sure enough Andrew looks back and motions us to come forward, he has found the Wolf Eel den.  Andrew and Vince, have marked OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA the den with a length of rope leading from a large rock over to the far side of a rock face pretty much right to where the wolf eel  lives.  Great idea guys!

After a few minutes of filming, it was time to start our return trip.  Geoff, headed shallow as the group continued back along the 50 foot mark.  If we had followed Geoff shallower, we would have had a run in with the second wolfe eel den and sure enough…we could have played with a small seal.

Advanced Open Water Course

hayward-kyle.jpg UWE and Suncoast Diving would like to congratulate Kyle H for completing his PADI Advanced Open Water Course.  Kyle has been trying to get his dive numbers up as he is heading to Campbell River to take his Commercial Divers Course, so he signed up for his AOW, and the Night Divers Specialty courses.

Yesterday had us out on the Sechelt Inlet to complete Kyle’s last two dives for his AOW.  We headed up to my all time favorite Wreck Dive on the HMCS CHAUDIERE.  Kyle certainly showed that he is an Advanced Open water diver as he had no difficulties completing this dive in rather challenging conditions.  The wind was up, and there was certainly a lot of wave action, but Kyle was quick to enter the water, and head down the descent line.  We spent 30 some odd minutes exploring the wreck.  Wolf Eel Always a fun dive!!

Dive two of the day had us heading back to Pipers Point, so Kyle could do his Underwater Photography dive.  We were planning to get back on the octopus that we found a week earlier in 90 feet of water.  There was certainly all the tell tail signs of an octopus being in the area, but he was not home when we arrived at his den.  But not to be disappointed, about 20 feet away, in 87 – 91 feet we found a beautiful female Wolf Eel sitting in her den.  A rare find in the inlet for me, I was really amazed how Wolf Eel beautiful she was.  Kyle, snapped away on the camera recording so nice images of the Eel.  To see more of Kyles Images, be sure to visit his Photo Gallery here on UWE.

New Night Divers

smith-carl.jpg UWE and Suncoast Diving wants to congratulate Carl S for his successful completion of the PADI Night Diver Specialty and his Peak Performance Buoyancy courses.

Monday and Tuesday of this week has seen a flurry of diving.  Carl, signed up for the Night Divers course, but while here decided he had interest in the Peak Performance Buoyancy course, so we set that up and ran both courses concerrently.  Mondays dives had us out at Tuwanek.  Our first dive of the day had us working on the PPB course.  We did weight checks, and then it was under water we headed.  We practiced hovering, not only on our stomaches facing the ocean bottom, but head down, feet up…then head up feet down.  Carl was equal to the task for all skills that were covered.

On dive two, we headed out for our first night dive for Kyle, and second one for Carl.  The dive went off with out a hitch, and both students did and excellent job in what was a reduced visibility night dive.

On day two, we decided we would head out to Pipers Point for our night dive!  Yes you got it….Octopus Encounter!!  Our night dive was amazing!  We had an encounter at about 95 feet, and the little guy was hidden way back in a small crack.

Great diving and great training!  Want to get out and night dive….why not take the PADI or SDI Night Diver Specialty, interested just send me an email…and lets get out diving!!
