Busy Couple of Days

Pacific Octopus UWE, has had a couple of busy days, we were out enjoying the fine weather on the inlet.  Friday had us diving on the Powers line up near Salmon Inlet.  This dive is a sheer wall drop off kind of dive.  Buoyancy is a must, but for the recreational diver you want to drop down to the 130ft mark and then slowly ride your no deco time into shallower water.  Things to see on the is wall, ar nice size glass/cloud sponges, which are found deeper then 110ft.  The wall in the 40 ft and shallower is excellent for marine life as well.  This is the wall that we got some excellent octopus footage, which was used in the Diving in Sechelt video.

The other dives were conducted on Pipers, 9 Mile Point and the ever favourite HMCS CHAUDIERE.  The visibility at 9 mile and Pipers was excellent, and we were treated to Ocotpus encounters on both of the dives.  The layer is clear to about 30 ft, then the visibility starts to come in closer and closer the deeper we headed.  The HMCS CHAUDIERE dive today, was an interesting one.  As we decended down the stern mooring line, it was evident that we were not going to be able to see the Chaud until we actual swam into her…and sure enough that is what happened.  Though I have to admit there was a lot of Ling Cods hiding around and on the wreck.  As always we had a great dive.

With the on set of warm weather it is sure getting nicer being out on the boat.  Don’t miss out on a great charter!

Kelp Crabs

UWE was out puttering in Tuwanek very shallow, and they got a few minutes of some nice footage of a Kelp Crab, playing around in the weeds.  As well, we captured a some frames of all the Sea Perch schooling fish, and visibility has to be unlimited it is so great!

New Advanced Open Water Divers

UWE would like to congratulate Rod E., Connie E., and Bill M., for successfully completing their Padi Advanced Open Water course.  We kicked off their training Saturday morning, out in Tuwanek.  All three students indicated that they had not been scuba diving in at least a year, so the first couple of dives were used as check out dives.  The visibility on Saturday was pretty close, with large particals in the water making the check out dives more challenging.

On Sunday we head of down the inlet to conduct the Deep dive of the Advanced Open Water which was done on the HMCS CHAUDIERE, which is always a good dive.  You could certainly see there was lots of excitement.  On the second dive, it was decided that we were heading to the Tzoonie Narrows for the drift dive, however we got skunked as there was little to no movement at all, but there was a very large number of Giant Nudi’s which are on of my favorites.

Tuesday night we decided we would try the Dirft option once again. so we packed up and headed off to the Tzoonie Narrows once again and sure enough we got ourselves a great drift dive.  The second dive was to be a night dive which was conducted off the boat on the left island in Tuwanek.  We rolled in right at the mooring line that drops us past the Octo den, so of course we had to check it out.  Once we had certainly freaked that octopus out with all the bright dive lights, it was off towards the shallows for my muck dive, where we saw a couple of small gunnels, a red octopus and many other cool little critters.

Today had us back at Tuwanek for the completion of the Nav portion of the Advanced Open Water.  Well done to all involved!!

Giant Pacific Octopus

Pacific Octopus UWE was out diving at Tuwanek Beach again today, as it is a dive that never disappoints, and once again today we were rewarded with a beautiful encounter with two Giant Pacific Octopi.  The sky was dark and threatening rain, but the water was calm, and visibility a little short, but still good enough to enjoy the trip out to the octo’s dens.

Susanne and I slowly proceeded down the sloping bottom until we ran into the wall, and then followed it out to the den in 70 feet of water.  As we approached we saw one smaller Giant Jellies, and some crabs.  As I headed into the den, I was at the lower portion of it, and there in the corner was a little octopus, who was very very curious, as they kept probing and playing with my Giant Pacific Octopus dive light.  Susanne was a little shallower then I, and was checking out the other portion of the den where she saw a “HUGE” octopus.  So, needless to say it was another successful dive!!

Congratulations to our New Dive Master

evans-matt.jpg UWE and Suncoast Diving are very very pleased to announce Matt E. has successfully completed his Dive Master Course yesterday out in Tuwanek.  UWE had three students out to Tuwanek for their PADI Advanced Open Waters course, and Matt only had to complete his Rescue Assessment, which he did with no difficulties at all.

Once Matt completed the accessment, he was quickly pressed into service, and lead the dive for one of our certified divers who was in need of a Professional Dive Buddy.  Matt, well done, great work, and we are very pleased that you have been successful with your training!
