Recreational Sidemount Course – June 2014

Recreational Sidemount Course - June 2014
Recreational Sidemount Course – June 2014

UWE and Ocean Quest Dive Center are excited to announce we have completed another Recreation Sidemount Course – June 2014.  We started with our first classroom session on the evening of the 26th of Sept.  We learned all the things needed to be a Sidemount Diver, as well why one would want to dive Sidemount.  Once we completed the presentation we started to do dry land practice so the student would know what to expect in the pool, which was completed for the 28th.

During the pool session, we practiced all the various skills the diver will need to successfully dive sidemount.  We also worked on fine tuning the gear as the 29th was our Ocean day where with would be doing 3 dives.  During the ocean session, all of the students did an excellent job completing what was asked of them.  One of the big things that was stressed as well, is to make your own decision on gear selection based on first hand knowledge not what someone tells them it should be.  All the loud voices for this kind of training are basing gear need on Cave, fresh warm water diving and have zero experience in what is is like in the cold waters off of British Columbia, in a dry suit with big dry gloves on.

If you are interested in taking a sidemount course, be sure to let me know, I will help get one organized for you.

Once again well done to all on the Recreational Sidemount Course – June 2014!!!

2013 Elite Instructor Award

2013 Elite Instructor

UWE is excited to announce we have been awarded the PADI 2013 Elite Instructor Award for certifying more than 200 certifications for PADI.  We were lucky enough to have some excellent opportunities to many different courses for Ocean Quest Dive Center in Burnaby.  We taught many Sidemount courses, Tec Sidemount as well as the Sidemount Instructor course as well.  We also did many Deep courses, and one Extended Range Deep course which was a ton of fun to teach.

The most important thing to note though, is that even though we taught many course we also ensure that we teach to the highest level possible ensuring we give more then just what is in the instructor manual.  If you are looking to take a course, and you want it taught to the highest level then be sure to check in with UWE and Ocean Quest Dive Center.

New Sidemount Instructors

Tori & Alex
Tori & Alex

UWE and Ocean Quest are very excited to congratulate Tori and Alex for becoming our New Sidemount Instructors.  Tori, a former Capilano University Professional Dive Instructor candidate who has returned to Ocean Quest to take her Sidemount Instructor program and Alex has come all the way from Germany!

Monday night was the Classroom session where we covered the PADI Standards for the Sidemount Instructor course, as well as practicing the dry skills that will be introduced to the students the pool night.  Everyone did a great job, and had the opportunity to present some of the skill sets that they will teach in their own Sidemount courses when they are instructing.

Wednesday night we went to SFU Pool where we spent 2 1/2 hours practising the skills for real, and each of the Instructor Candidates were tasked with teaching a couple of the various skills that they will be teaching in the ocean.  This is the time where we learn to perfect the skills so we have roll-model like skill levels.

Friday and Saturday were Ocean days where each candidate had to teach two of the three dives that the the users levels would be learning.  Each candidate was put to the test, fixing errors and making sure that the dives will run safely.  After being put to the test, everyone was able to make the cut!! Well done to everyone!!  Amy, Nathan, and Chantal need to complete their Ocean dives yet before certification.

Interested in taking the Sidemount Instructor course, contact Ocean Quest for more details.

AOW

Advanced Open Water Ocean Quest
Advanced Open Water Ocean Quest

UWE and Ocean Quest are very excited to announce we have three new Advanced Open Water divers.  Lenka, Brian and Holland joined us to complete their AOW.  Our class started on the Monday night where we went to work on some classroom presentations covering the importance of proper fin kicks, awareness breathing gas management as well as buoyancy.

We then proceeded in the the pool at UBC, where we took the classroom information and put it to practice in the water, where we took the time to video tape everyone’s swimming and buoyancy.  This is such a valuable way to learn proper diving, as the student actually gets to see a video debrief of their trip, movements and hand signals as they use them.  We have been receiving very positive feed back with this method of training.

The weekend had the group out conducting the PPB, Deep, Navigation, Night and Wreck dives at the various locations around the Vancouver area.  Conditions where amazing with at least 80 foot visibility and the students had an amazing time.

Looking to take your AOW, looking for great instruction, well then look no further, contact Ocean Quest and lets get you diving!!
