Rec/Tec Sidemount Class

Rec/Tec Sidemount Class
Rec/Tec Sidemount Class

UWE and Ocean Quest Dive center is excited to congratulate everyone who has completed the Rec/Tec Sidemount Class which was run in Jan.  We had seven people taking either the Recreational Sidemount or Technical Sidemount training with us.  We also had one student working on his Recreational Sidemount instructor course.

Our Rec/Tec Sidemount Class is done over a 4 day period of time with one evening being a classroom session that not only discusses Sidemount, the benefits of diving sidemount.  The many different configurations for Sidemount, and also we work on the skills we will be conducting in the pool and ocean in the classroom so we can practice good form.  We also stress that we do things to make getting into Sidemount a little more user friendly, things such as longer chokers and tail clips so when you are learning it is less frustrating getting in and out of your set up.  We also stress that as you become more comfortable with diving sidemount, you can tailor your set up, shorten chokers, everything to make it more streamlined.  We also show you that we a training to dive open ocean sidemount, not Cave sidemount, so things will be a little different then what is read on all these forms that discuss how things must be, but do not address the issues with cold water, dry gloves and open ocean.  Everything you learn with us, can be tailored for the environment you are diving in.

Our pool session covers advanced fining techniques, lost regulator procedures, S drills, Valve drills,  as well as detaching and swimming with the cylinders in front of the diver.  We also stress proper trim, which is so very important in your proper diving position.  As the training progress, we will conduct video play back so you can see what you are actually doing during the skills practice and we find that people improve so much more quickly by seeing what they look like in the water.

Once the pool session is completed we head to the ocean. In order to be successful in the Recreational training you need to complete at least three dives and demonstrate proper and say skill execution.  We continue to stress proper trim, which we see improvement from the pool, though not perfect, you can still be successful and complete the course and struggle with trim.  Trim is mastered by diving, and though it is easy once you are able to do it, it does take practice.  To complete the Tec Sidemount part of the training there are two additional dives that you must complete with wearing up to 4 cylinders, and complete the various skills that you need to demonstrate.    We use the Tec Sidemount course as the stepping stone to the Tec 40 training as we need to have good bottle handling skills in order to be successful in the Tec 40 program so its a good idea to take this prep course.

Once again well done to everyone for their great work on the Rec/Tec Sidemount Class.  Interested in taking the Sidemount course, feel free to email us or call Ocean Quest so we can make arrangements with your training.

New Sidemount Instructors

Tori & Alex
Tori & Alex

UWE and Ocean Quest are very excited to congratulate Tori and Alex for becoming our New Sidemount Instructors.  Tori, a former Capilano University Professional Dive Instructor candidate who has returned to Ocean Quest to take her Sidemount Instructor program and Alex has come all the way from Germany!

Monday night was the Classroom session where we covered the PADI Standards for the Sidemount Instructor course, as well as practicing the dry skills that will be introduced to the students the pool night.  Everyone did a great job, and had the opportunity to present some of the skill sets that they will teach in their own Sidemount courses when they are instructing.

Wednesday night we went to SFU Pool where we spent 2 1/2 hours practising the skills for real, and each of the Instructor Candidates were tasked with teaching a couple of the various skills that they will be teaching in the ocean.  This is the time where we learn to perfect the skills so we have roll-model like skill levels.

Friday and Saturday were Ocean days where each candidate had to teach two of the three dives that the the users levels would be learning.  Each candidate was put to the test, fixing errors and making sure that the dives will run safely.  After being put to the test, everyone was able to make the cut!! Well done to everyone!!  Amy, Nathan, and Chantal need to complete their Ocean dives yet before certification.

Capilano U

Cap U goes Sidemount!
Cap U goes Sidemount!

UWE and Ocean Quest spent last week at Capilano U conducting their MSDT program and as a treat we did a PADI Sidemount diver level course for the graduating class.  We had an awesome turn out from Capilano U with 6 students deciding they wanted to leap directly into Sidemount diving!  Personally I see no other way of diving now, Sidemount diving so much easier if you will.  We are totally redundant and capable of helping ourselves in the event of any lost equipment.

The Capilano U students showed how easy it is to convert to Sidemount diving.  After 3 hours in the classroom, and the 3 hours in the pool with 3 ocean dives, and everyone made it look like they had been diving sidemount all their lives!  We introduce the Capilano U group to the Hollis SMS 100 BCD, with the Hollis sidemount regulators, and everyone agrees, that this is all great equipment!

Well done Capilano U…best of luck with your future diving!  Interested in the PADI Sidemount course, be sure to contact Ocean Quest to see how about getting certified!!

Sidemount Diver

Latest Sidemount Course
Latest Sidemount Course

UWE and Ocean Quest are very excited to announce we have more Recreational Sidemount Divers.  Ocean Quest conducted a pool try Sidemount event on the first of March, this was a huge success….everyone involved seemed to have a great time!!

We started a Sidemount Diver course on the 11th of March, with a full class of 4 people.  Everyone did very well in the classroom, quickly figuring out the new procedures and gear set up!!  We went off to the pool on the Saturday where we did all the various skills and drills, so we could ensure everyone had a good understanding of the dive skills.  Sunday had us out in the ocean where the conditions were very challenging with some very bad visibility, cold temperatures and choppy seas!! Overall every did a great job!!

Everyone seems to ask why pay a little more with us, and I have to say, having seen many of the Sidemount Divers whom kind of self teach how to dive this rig, seem to have so much more trouble.  Having been trained by Jeff Loflen, we learned how to dive sidemount, but also how to teach the sidemount diver course…which is what you truely want.  You want the instructor that knows how to teach the course, especially the ones that were trained by the creator of the course

Don’t miss out everyone, we have another Sidemount Diver course running in April….sign up now!!!!

PADI Sidemount Divers

Brian & Maruesz New Sidemount Divers
Brian & Maruesz New Sidemount Divers

UWE and Ocean Quest Dive centre are excited to announce we have two new graduates from the PADI Sidemount Divers course.  Brian and Mariusz joined the course on the 24th of Sept.  They worked hard in the classroom session, learning how to properly rig their bottles, and regs, as well how to do proper valve drills and S-Drills in order to stay safe while diving.

We headed off to a 2.5 hour pool session, where we put all the divers through their paces to make sure they could perform all of their skills, while in a controlled environment.  The PADI Sidemount Divers course goes in depth with various skills, but Ocean Quest takes it a step further ensuring good propulsion techniques, and buoyancy.  We also introduced them to proper gas management, and Rock bottom calculations.

During the ocean phase, Brian and Mariusz discovered that the Sidemount Rig is even easier to dive in the ocean then pool.  We had a couple of problems with proper valve drills, but we were able to clean things up and in the end we were all successful.  Well done guys for completing the PADI Sidemount Divers course!

Sidemount Training

Sidemount Pool Training
Sidemount Pool Training

UWE and Ocean Quest are working on a private Sidemount training session with two students.  Yesterday, the students were in the pool and being put through their paces in their sidemount training.

First things first, learning the correct way in which to wear dual bottles in the sidemount configuration, from there we went into advanced fining techniques, and learning how to hover properly in pace.  Then things got interesting with lost regulator, valve shut down drills, S drills, and my favourite, swinging the bottles forward and swimming in this set up.

The learning curve was steep, but everyone did a great job, though some of the skills needed to be repeated, everyone made the cut and are headed to the ocean next.  Be sure to stop back in a couple of days and see how everyone made out in the ocean.
